dictionary

Here is the defition to internet marketing and some of the areas in that niche:

Definition: Internet Marketing - also known as web marketing, online marketing, webvertising, or e-marketing, is referred to as the marketing (generally promotion) of products or services over the Internet.

There are many ways to dive into internet marketing and there are multiple angles to take once you dive in. We're going to go through some definitions just to familiarize you guys with the services you may need. It’s hard to know what you want when you don’t know what questions to ask, right?

We'll start with two of the biggest forms of internet marketing: SEO and SEM.

SEO:

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine's "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results.

SEM:

Search engine marketing (SEM) - a form of internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs) through optimization (both on-page and off-page) as well as through advertising (paid placements, contextual advertising, and paid inclusions).

The main difference between SEO and SEM is the amount of marketing that goes into SEM. SEM is a big umbrella that usually involves SEO, but what sets it apart is its focus on paid advertising through Pay Per Click, Google AdWords, and display ads you see on various sites as you browse the internet.

Another way to utilize internet marketing is through social networks.

social media marketing

Social Media Marketing:

Social media marketing is the process of gaining website traffic or attention through social media sites.

Examples of social media marketing include Facebook engagement like share, comment, and like, Twitter retweets, Pinterest repins, Instagram likes, and many, many more are all ways to expand your brand and your product to more people. Many companies will create infographics to gain traction in the social media world as well as contests, giveaways, hashtag chats, etc.

Another huge focus in internet marketing is paid advertising on the web. A major way of doing this is through Google AdWords and Pay Per Click (PPC).

Google Adwords:

Adwords is an advertising service Google provides for businesses wanting to display ads on Google and its advertising network. This program enables you as a business to set a budget for your advertising efforts and only pay when people click the ads you set up.

Pay Per Click:

Pay Per Click (PPC)  is an Internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, where advertisers pay the publisher (typically a website owner) when the ad is clicked.

This model has been around for quite some time and is one reason why Google is a multi-billion dollar company. Honestly these two components are such an in depth topic it deserves its own blog post.

Another focus of Internet marketing is analytics, reports, and results. You can focus on all the things we’ve talked about, but it doesn’t really matter if you don’t see a bottom line result.

Web Analytics:

Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage.

The last internet marketing feature we're going to mention is inbound marketing.

Inbound Marketing

Inbound marketing is based on the concept of earning the attention of prospects, making yourself easy to be found and drawing customers to your website by producing content customers value.

Content marketing through the forms of blogging, podcasts, video, eBooks, enewsletters, whitepapers, and social media marketing are just some of things that are considered inbound marketing. One of our favorite ways inbound marketing has been used in the last few years is by the company Dollar Shave Club. They created a fun video that answered questions, made you laugh, and more importantly - made you share it.

There are many more avenues to take in the field of internet marketing, but it’s important to familiarize yourself with the ones mentioned as well as email marketing. Understanding these topics more in depth can help you focus on what would work best for your business. If you need help, feel free to contact us. That’s what were here for after all!
