Forget the Bullhorn, Use Twitter
Twitter is showing up all over the news. No, it is not just a portal to the mind of Ashton Kutcher and MC Hammer. The news is covering twitter’s new role as a “helping” hand. In 2007 during a Los Angeles earthquake, people tweeted their experiences and others kept in touch through the social networking site when phone lines went down.
Most recently in Memphis, clients of MLGW kept in touch with them through twitter. Even Jerry Collins, the MLGW President was tweeting, letting their clients know about the progress and responding to every post within 30 minutes.
The most nationally renowned twitter story currently is the rescheduling of their maintenance to aid the Iranian protest situation. There was an outpour of anger in Iran after it was announced that reform candidate Mir Houssein Mousavi had lost. Voter fraud was suspected and protests began almost immediately. With a powerful world event taking place, Twitter knew they could not have downtime when people so obviously needed a voice.
As the protests and government reactions turned violent, Twitter turned green. Supporters of change in Iran have turned their avatars green and are prompting for prayer and good thoughts towards #iranelection. Twitter has single-handedly created a forum to include younger generations in important world issues. Along with posting a fun status update, you can now use Twitter to start a revolution.
