We Can't Say We'll Miss You, IE6

Posted by RocketFuel Team on June 3rd, 2010

After years of enduring the inconsistencies that come with Internet Explorer 6, it would appear we are about to witness its fall (finally).  We are hoping this means we will be free of the headache inducing, ancient browser soon enough.

For a developer, IE6 has been nothing but trouble.  A site can work perfectly in IE7, IE8, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome, but somehow IE6 just doesn’t want to cooperate.  Let’s just say that IE6 is a browser that just won’t play nicely.  The most frustrating part of the browser is that it poses a serious problem with CSS, which is supposed to be our unified web standard.

Having to satisfy the old school web standards of IE6, as well as all the new browsers, has become a burden on advancements in web development. Some might say that many valuable hours have been wasted by web developers trying to satisfy both current and ancient web standards.

One of the main problems with eliminating IE6 is that some people developed applications and programs internally around the browser (10-ish years ago) and now they can not afford to redevelop.  Sheesh.

Needless to say, when we heard that IE6 had dropped from 11% of the market share to 4.7%, we were in a party mood.
